Solid state drives (SSD's) are beginning to proliferate as stand alone devices that you can either use in an external USB enclosure, or insert into a notebook as a replacement for an existing internal hard drive. Replacing or upgrading a hard drive in a netbook is more difficult due to the many different interfaces that have been used to date.
Recently the SATA-IO working group announced a new mini-SATA standard called mSATA which will allow all the manufacturers of netbooks and similar small devices to put standardized SSD's into their products. Look for the first such from Toshiba, with Lenovo, HP, Dell and others not too far behind.
